The Municipal Labor and Income Secretariat (SMTE), in partnership with Revolusolar, is conducting an unprecedented study on the challenges and opportunities of the solar labor market in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The first results of the study will be presented on the day April 26, at 2 p.m., no Rio Planetarium, in Gávea.

Based on a questionnaire sent to companies in the sector, an analysis of the current market scenario is being carried out and a proposal has been prepared to expand the use of solar energy in the city. The information collected will also serve as a support for the G20 and pre-COP discussions, especially with regard to the energy transition and the reduction of inequalities.

The event will include the presentation of data on the panel “Presentation of the Results and the Social Perspective”, which will be mediated by Graziella Albuquerque, coordinator of Institutional and Governmental Relations at Revolusolar. They also participate Allan Marchione, manager of Green Jobs at SMTE, Camilla Nascimento, director of WIN Solar, and Dinei Medina, Revolusolar's community ambassador.

“There is still a pent-up demand for the popularization of solar energy in our city. Rio is bathed in the sun year-round, and green jobs are on the agenda. By mid-2023, it was estimated that around eight thousand solar systems were installed in the city, generating great demand for photovoltaic panel installers. The expansion of the sector points us to an even more promising future in the generation of jobs,” he says Everton Gomes, municipal labor and income secretary.

Currently, the state of Rio occupies the 10th position in the national ranking of solar energy generation, while the city is at 8th place among Brazilian municipalities. Since 2012, according to data from the Brazilian Photovoltaic Solar Energy Association (Absolar), the sector has generated more than 22,000 jobs, R$ 4 billion in investments and more than 700 MW of installed capacity in the region.

Na Cooperativa Percília and Lúcio, created by Revolusolar in Morro da Babilônia, it is possible to see this impact up close: they are 112 photovoltaic solar panels What make up the first solar energy cooperative in favelas in Brazil, benefiting 60 families of the community. In Chapéu Mangueira and other parts of the territory, hostels, schools, and homes are also supplied with clean energy.

“A just and inclusive energy transition, capable of combating energy poverty, is one of humanity's great challenges. Brazil — and especially Rio — can lead this process by example. We already have the first solar cooperative in favelas here, and in 2024, Revolusolar is expanding its social solar energy model nationally. Now it's the turn for governments and companies to do their part. City halls play a central role in this transformation, using decentralized solar energy for the direct benefit of the population”, he defends Eduardo Avila, executive director of Revolusolar.
